John McGaw Foster (1860-1928)
John McGaw Foster was born on 4 February 1860 in Bangor, Penobscot, Maine. He was the only surviving son of John Burt and Catherine (McGaw) Foster. At the time of the 1860 census, John was five months old and he, his parents, and sisters were living with his grandfather, Jacob McGaw, in Bangor.
In 1870, John was ten years old and attending school. His older sister, Mary Katherine, had married Charles Henry Howard and moved out. His other sister, Cornelia Margaret, at twenty-two was still at home. She married Thomas Lawrence Riggs in 1872, so in the 1880 census John was the only child still at home with his parents.
His early education was at Phillips Exeter Academy and later he graduated from Harvard College in 1882. He went on to Andover Theological Seminary and in 1885 he graduated and was ordained in to the ministry of the Episcopal church.
John married Grace Greenleaf Eames on 4 January 1887 in All Saints’ Church in Worcester, Worcester, Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Daniel Henry and Mary Greenleaf (Cole) Eames, born on 23 November 1857 in Worcester.
John, Grace and their two children, Katharine McGaw and Duncan Graham, were living in Boston in 1900. He was the rector at Church of Messiah (Episcopalian) for several years until 1922.
Katharine McGaw Foster, John and Grace’s daughter, died of apoplexy 24 August 1910 at the age of 22. Their son, Duncan Graham, married Corinne Borden Freeman and became a Professor at Swarthmore College.
John McGaw Foster died 30 October 1928 in Lakeville, Litchfield, Connecticut.
John and Grace had the following children:
- Katharine McGaw Foster, born 8 March 1888 in Bangor, Penobscot, Maine and died 24 August 1910 in Gloucester, Essex, Massachusetts.
- Duncan Graham Foster, born 26 May 1897 in Worcester, Worcester, Massachusetts and died 18 September 1975 in Swarthmore, Delaware, Pennsylvania.
